What's on my mind? September 1, 2018 The start of the meteorological autumn...

What's on my mind?

Family picnic in the pine grove along the Farmington River, People's Forest, Connecticut.

These trees were TALL!

Started coloring this page with colored pencil while riding in the car. Later added some watercolor. Watercolor, colored pencil, Micron pen in my Jane Davenport Canvas Journal.

Urban Sketching in Boyertown... And Tree #135/10,000

So used to drawing organic shapes! Buildings and angles are hard to understand. But I gave it a go anyway. This is the Good Shepard Church in Boyertown, PA. The church was built around 1814 and the steeple was replaced by the clock tower about a 100 years later. Instead of tackling the whole building, I started with just the clock tower and one chimney. What a wuss. I probably should take Liz Steel's course on drawing buildings or at least practice, practice practice.

Gum Ran is a wonderful artist who puts up with my sketchbook antics while she masterfully executes watercolor paintings. The other day she actually said, "You're getting better!"

Egads! Look at the angles on that tower!

Ahhh, saved by the trees on the side of the church.

Interesting display of very old tombstones behind the church. I searched for information about them on the webber-net. All that I could discover was that a cemetery was "reduced" for the expansion of a bank and then again for some work done at the church.  The headstones are arranged in 5 double rows. The names on the monuments are barely or not at all readable and yet someone planted an American flag by one of them.

Tree # 132: Speedwell Lake

An oppressive hot and humid Monday evening and here I am Nature Journaling at Speedwell Lake with PA Master Naturalist Carol and Secretary of the Butterfly Club, Jan. The lake is formed by a small dam so it is man-made. The non-native Bradford tree in the picture was planted as a memorial.

But the amazing and amusing white egrets were wonderful to watch! Because they had short legs and, as Carol described them while viewing through her binoculars, looked "dirty" (darker patches), I'm going to guess that they were Cattle Egrets and not the Great Whites.

Oh, you know, when he gives you THAT LOOK...

A haughty look that only a swan can give you...

With the teachers at the summer Literacy Institute at Millersville University nature journaling at the pond behind the library.

The pond is certified by the National Wildlife Federation as a wildlife habitat because it provides food, water, cover, and places to raise young.

Journaling Jean sitting on the bridge and struggling to draw the serpentine neck of a swan.

Oh, Good! A new skill to work on: painting reflections in water.

Blessed to have 10,000 things to draw.

Tom dropped his glasses once, in the Atlantic Ocean, he searched and searched...

A day at the beach. We visited the lovely Belmar Beach at the Jersey Shore. I wanted to paint the horizon but only had my 60 lbs paper ProArt sketchbook with me. Went ahead and tried it anyway. As I was capturing waves with watercolors, I noticed that Tom appeared to be looking for something in the water. Stingray! No. A wave had knocked his glasses off. He searched and searched but never found them. I just had to add him to the picture.

Journaling at Blue Marsh Lake

Journaling with Carol and Francine at Blue Marsh Lake. A beautiful evening to sit and enjoy the company and the view!

Blue Marsh Lake was built by the Army Corps of Engineers. The dam, built to control flooding, flooded out Pleasant Valley near the town of Blue Marsh. You can read about it in the Visitor's Center.

We sat on the hill under the Sycamore tree.

I didn't plan the composition ahead of time and wound up just painting the tree over the lake.

Got a little too heavy with the large Sycamore leaves and the landscape disappeared!

While sitting on the hill above the lake, the Turkey Vultures came so close you could almost reach out and touch them!

It was early evening, and you could hear the voices of the children on the beach across the lake when the breeze blew in from that direction. There were a few jet skis on the lake as well as some fishermen.

Sea Hag

After 300 years in the ocean even the Little Mermaid shows signs of aging!

The snail represents how life may slow down...

Art and Oatmeal with Georgia Blueberries: Adding shimmer and sparkle to yesterday's journal page

Climber's Run Picnic in the Preserve. A little time to journal before painting with the kiddos. It was hot and humid, the air shimmering through the trees. The predicted storms never appeared and not a raindrop fell.

Just painted with watercolors and added a few Sharpie lines. Decided to punch in up this morning! Added text and Tombow marker, Inktense Pencil, Posca White, Twinkling H20s, etc., etc.

Going for the "I don't think I can put any more on this page" look. Or you can just call it "Play".

Not the way most people nature journal! Loved the yellow Spatterdock down in the pond. Added Sparkly marker to the water because - Why not?

I think the sparkle in the grass must be some iridescent paint that was in my travel watercolor kit. The Cattail seeds were ready to fly!

Conk Conk-er-reeeeee! the Red-winged Black Bird sang his song.
