Super Duper Blue Blood Moon Rare Lunar Event January 31, 2018

On January 31, 2018, a Super Blue Blood Moon will be visible from the United States for the first time since 1866.

It is a Super Moon because on January 30th the Moon will be at the point in its orbit that is closest to Earth.  The Moon appears to be at its largest and brightest during this time.

It is a Blue Moon because it is the second full moon during the calendar month of January. The first full moon was on January 1st.

It is a Blood Moon because the Earth will pass between the Moon and the Sun creating a shadow on the Moon. The Moon can appear reddish at this time.

It is also a Lunar Eclipse event that will be visible in Hawaii, Alaska, and Eastern Asia and Australia.

Art Journal Process: Crystal Geode Tunnel Pages

Creating "Tunnel Pages" in my journal:

I started with tearing a rough rock shape into the page. Then traced around the hole. When I tore the second hole, I made sure to leave a border showing. Lastly, I traced the second hole onto the third page.

I drew the outside of the geode around the first hole and used Daniel Smith Watercolors to paint it in. Primatek colors granulate nicely and look super on rocks. The geode is a green color called Jadeite Genuine.

On the second page, I used Acrylic Matte Medium to glue down pieces of real mica to represent the finer crystal inner layer of the geode.

On the third page, I painted the amethyst crystals with watercolors and added just a touch of Stickles for sparkle!

I finished off the geode with a miner Gnome inspired by the book Watercolor Fairies (see link below). I used Ranger Distress Markers to color him in.

The face on the Celtic Tree is peeking through the tunnel page.

Hog Island: The Puffin/Tern Connection

Audubon Camp on Hog Island, Maine. June 2017 Boat trip to Eastern Egg Island.

Eastern Egg Island: home to 172 breeding pairs of puffins during the 2017 season. They raise their young deep in the crevices of the seaside rocks.

You can see the terns flying over the island. There are 1400 pairs on the island. They make their nests on the rocks or at the edge of the grassy areas.

The terns are territorial. They fly at intruders and are quick to investigate unusual events such as a dead bird floating nearby in the water. Perhaps their warning system helps the puffins!
