#MyCanterburyCoddiwomples #The100DayProject Day #35 Finding more on twiggy...

March and April are prime Lichen viewing months but here we are into May. The weather is still cool and rainy so there may be more yet to come! Today I worked a bit more on this twig, drawing the tiny lichen above the ruffly one. It has great apothecia but I haven't identified it yet.

Zoomy image of lichen with apothecia.

There are a few more species below the tiny rosette. One is more of a yellowish-green (wet) foliose lichen and the other a darker green (wet) one. The darker one, I believe, looks like a "Hammered Shield Lichen" because of its overall look, no apothecia, and based on the fact it is common in this area and is found on bark. Its Latin name is Parmelia sulcata.

Zoomy image. "Sulcata" is derived from sulcatus which means grooved or furrowed.

#MyCanterburyCoddiwomples #The100DayProject Days #28 and #29 Staring at Lichen

I find myself inspecting little granules as it were on the bark of trees - little shields or apothecia springing from a thallus - such is the mood of my mind - and I call it studying lichens.
Henry David Thoreau

Day #28's find is a tiny rosette perhaps a bottlebrush shield lichen and Day#29 is an even tinier crustose lichen with apothecia perhaps a Lecanora species. Or perhaps not! Doesn't matter right now for it will take me a long time to learn even a little about lichen but in the meanwhile their morphology and features are fun and interesting to study.

#MyCanterburyCoddiwomples #The100DayProject Day #27 Ruffles

An awesome ruffly lichen with black eyelashes!

Well, really they are "cilia on the lobe margin", but they sure look like eyelashes to me.

Zoomy: Cilia on lichen lobes. (Eyelashes!)

I could probably spend all summer trying to figure out all of the species growing on this twig. Of course, I'm not going to do that. I will, however, invest a few days. So the next few entries will be all about the neighbors of this Ruffled Lichen which may be a species of Parmotrema.

#MyCanterburyCoddiwomples #The100DayProject Day #16 Lichen: Frullania

The exceptional liverwort, Frullania, grows high up on trees. Most liverworts are found in wet places because of their intolerance to desiccation.

#MyCanterburyCoddiwomples #The100DayProject Day #12 Lipstick Powderhorn lichen

Wonderful Lipstick Powderhorn Lichen, Cladonia macilenta,  growing on the side of a log.

Love the red "lips". They make this lichen so fascinating to find!

#MyCanterburyCoddiwomples #The100DayProject Day#11 Lichen: Old Man's Beard

I found a tiny bit of what I think is an Usnea lichen commonly known as the Old Man's Beard.

Branching tip of lichen with Zoomy.

A larger bit of lichen but it's still on the small side.

There are 400 kinds of lichens in Connecticut. I've drawn bits of 4 of them so far.

#MyCanterburyCoddiwomples #The100DayProject Day#6/100 Lichen: Apothecia of Physica aipolia

This lichen was actually a lot of fun to draw! I found it on a fallen branch in the woods.

Perhaps a Rosette Lichen on bark. Physica aipolia?

I think the dark cup-like features are apothecia or spore bearing structures.

Found these adorable Pixie Cup Lichens on a log surrounded by different kinds of mosses.

Perhaps a Cladonia species?

Narrow Depth of Field: British Soldiers

Cladonia cristatella "British Soldiers" Fruticose Lichen

Creating bokeh background: masked off the page with painter's tape.

Scribbled in a background with Derwent Art Bars. Then painted over the page with a waterbrush being careful not to blend all the colors away.

When dry, used a stencil to add circles.
