Art and Oatmeal: A Friend's Freesia

Sketching in the kitchen with Kay. She had a lovely Freesia! Watercolors in a Strathmore 500 Series Mixed Media Journal.

During Art and Oatmeal the next day, I decided I wanted to sketch the Freesia again trying a different color and composition.

I thought I wanted lighter pink flowers but in the end, I liked the original darker purple flowers better! I painted fewer leaves in this version, and I like the "airier" feel to the composition. So it's the flowers from the first picture and the leaves from the second one! Always find something you love about your art, even if it is just one square inch!

Speaking of one square inch, there was an oops - a dark green blob. And in the spirit of Carolyn Dube, I took it as an "Outstanding Opportunity Presenting Suddenly" to add a lively insect to the sketch.

A Disaster turned into "A Summer Garden Journal Page"

juillet 2017 jardin

I was just happily engaged with gesso and acrylics and other art supplies too numerous to even remember, when I decided to dry the page with a heat tool.....

... everything started to crack and buckle and peel off. You can just see a touch of it in the page gutter.

I didn't take any pictures at the time... I was too busy trying to figure out what to do to save the page!

I scraped and painted and scraped and tried more paint and just kept going until eventually things started to stick to the page.

There's still a few spots that want to peel away... but I am happy with the quality of the black ink lines!

Gesso, acrylic paint, and "too many different products that probably shouldn't be used together" in my Strathmore 500 Series Mixed Media Journal.

A Winter's Night Blessing

Blessed be the rays of the shortest days
of the coldest time of the year,
When in days of old, great fires leapt
to allay the people's fear
That the sun would traverse afar
Never again to be near.

As they danced away the longest night,
And drank great draughts of beer,
Their voices rang through out the land
With this ancient cheer...

"Come back, Sun, come back!"

Art Journal Flip #9

Narrated art journal flip through my Strathmore 500 Series Mixed Media Journal #9.

May Journal Page: Teacup Garden

I was sketching the tulips in the Teacup Garden at Chanticleer when a fit of fantasy overcame me!

I started with the image on the left but after I learned that the "Mentor" tulips are described as "teacup" shaped and that they were planted in the Teacup Garden, I just had to create a new sketch!

First sketch. Watercolors and ink in my Strathmore 500 Series Mixed Media Journal.

Art and Oatmeal: Trim the Christmas Tree Doodle

Fun doodle during Oatmeal.

I watched a "loosen up your lines" video by Paivi at peonyandparakeet.com.

Start with geometric shapes.

Make the shapes more organic.

Really loosen up your line.

Go crazy!

Adding color with Derwent Inktense Pencils.

Details are made with black Ultra Fine Sharpie and white Posca Pen.

Of course there is glitter for a bit of sparkle and shine!

My Very First Nature Journal! A narrated flip through my 2006-2008 journal.

August Journal Page: Urban Sketching in Cheshire, CT

A bit of urban sketching on the Cheshire Green: The First Congregation Church of Cheshire (1827).

Inspired by Liz Steel to try to draw a few buildings but I don't have the architect's eye! Liz makes the lines and details of a building sing and dance and come to life with color.
