Bird Habitat Field Trips #HogIsland2019

"..the little things that run the world" EO Wilson

A walk-about at the Marple Maple Farm. Plantings encourage insects to feast and breed so bird parents have plenty to feed the young'uns.

Much knowledge and wisdom from Deb Perkins, Doug Tallamy, and Steve Kress.

Yay! Baby Bird food!

#SBSColoredPencils #PlaysWithPencils "I choose truth over facts...." (August 2019)

Inspired by a sculpture I saw this past weekend at the Mystic Art Festival.

The truth of this image is definitely more compelling than any fact.

What's on my mind? August 22, 2018 Digger Wasps...

What's on my mind?

I noticed there haven't been as many destructive Japanese Beetles in the yard this year as there were last year. I usually pick them off of the plants and give them a bubbly demise by dropping them into a jar of soapy water. I have noticed though, that there were swarms and swarms of an insect flying low to the ground everywhere in the yard.

Upon investigation, I learned that this bumper crop of insects were the Blue-winged Digger Wasps, Scolia dubia. The female burrows into the soil and lays an egg on a beetle larva. The beetle is consumed as the wasp grows (parasitoid).

Shown is the adult feeding on the nectar of Goldenrod flower. They also enjoy a good Mountain Mint. Perhaps this native wasp is my "beneficial" of the year!

#30Pages#30Days Sktchy Challenge Page 3 March 3

#30Pages30Days
Sktchy Challenge
Page 3 March 3

Challenge today was to go out on location and sketch a building or two. Thought about sketching the barn but once outside I saw that the crocus were blooming!

Distracted! Had to complete my annual tradition of painting with a crocus petal. Crocus petal, Derwent Watercolor Pencil (mineral green), and Lamy Pen with Noodler's Bulletproof ink in Jane Davenport Canvas Journal.

My art process of painting with a flower petal is to smash it into the paper, and you can watch it here!

Heartstones, River Rocks, and Purple Pebbles

Take joy in painting a rock! Watercolor pencils and acrylic glazing medium in Strathmore 500 Series Mixed Media.

Watch the video to see my process using watercolor pencils and acrylic glazing medium.

I have a habit of picking up stones and putting them in my pocket.

Wise Old Possum Woman says a rock with a white band that completely encircles it is called a Wishing Stone. If you find one you can make a wish, but for the wish to come true you must then throw the rock into a lake. Two white bands means two wishes!

The center concretion "Fairy Stone" comes from Canada. It was formed thousands of years ago from sand and clay in a large glacier lake.

Art and Oatmeal: A Wishing Stone

A Wishing Stone has a white ring around the entire rock. According to Wise Old 'Possum Woman, if you find a Wishing Stone, hold it between your hands, make a wish, and then throw it into the nearest body of water such as the ocean, a lake or a stream and the wish will come true.

Limestone rock with white quartz ring. The top sketch was the first try. Hah, not even close. I have a tendency to elongate everything! Tried again below it and next to the rose. Better, but not completely satisfied with the result.

Happy enough with the third effort to call it "sketched".  On to the next rock...
