#PlaysWithPencils Space Rocks! Version 3 (tan background)
Derwent Metallic Pencils in a Strathmore Toned Tan Sketch Paper Journal.
When not tilted toward the light source, the page looks a little blah.
On these rocks I decided to do some mark making with my Lamy fountain pen.

#PlaysWithPencils Space Rocks! ver. 1 and 2 (black backgrounds)
Space Rocks colored with Derwent Metallic Pencils. The left hand version is drawn on black gesso in my Jane Davenport Canvas Journal. The right hand version is drawn in a sketchbook with black paper.
The heavy texture in the Jane Davenport comes across even when the page has been gessoed.
Move paper around in the light to catch the metallic glow.

Art Journal Process: Crystal Geode Tunnel Pages
Creating "Tunnel Pages" in my journal:
Art Supplies to play with:
I started with tearing a rough rock shape into the page. Then traced around the hole. When I tore the second hole, I made sure to leave a border showing. Lastly, I traced the second hole onto the third page.
I drew the outside of the geode around the first hole and used Daniel Smith Watercolors to paint it in. Primatek colors granulate nicely and look super on rocks. The geode is a green color called Jadeite Genuine.
On the second page, I used Acrylic Matte Medium to glue down pieces of real mica to represent the finer crystal inner layer of the geode.
On the third page, I painted the amethyst crystals with watercolors and added just a touch of Stickles for sparkle!
I finished off the geode with a miner Gnome inspired by the book Watercolor Fairies (see link below). I used Ranger Distress Markers to color him in.
The face on the Celtic Tree is peeking through the tunnel page.

Heartstones, River Rocks, and Purple Pebbles
Take joy in painting a rock! Watercolor pencils and acrylic glazing medium in Strathmore 500 Series Mixed Media.
Watch the video to see my process using watercolor pencils and acrylic glazing medium.
I have a habit of picking up stones and putting them in my pocket.
Wise Old Possum Woman says a rock with a white band that completely encircles it is called a Wishing Stone. If you find one you can make a wish, but for the wish to come true you must then throw the rock into a lake. Two white bands means two wishes!
The center concretion "Fairy Stone" comes from Canada. It was formed thousands of years ago from sand and clay in a large glacier lake.

Playing with earth on Earth Day...
First Sunday in April at Nolde Forest Environmental Education Center.
Layers of mud, yes, real mud, sand resin, acrylic paint, and just a touch of glitter paint.
"Petroglyphs" were carved with the handle of a paint brush. And, yes, this IS in my Strathmore 500 Series Mixed Media Sketchbook.

#DannyGregoryQuotes #3DaysinParsippany #ParsippanyPastelMountains
500 million years ago
a chain of volcanic islands
formed of polychromatic basaltic rocks
crashed into the Jersey Shore
creating the famous Parsippany Pastel Mountains
that grew to tremendous heights
in the western portion of the township
but were eventually worn down
by the
shimmering and glimmering
Rockaway River
that flows into a basin
created by the Wisconsin Glacier
around 21,000 BC and looks like
an old
crone picking blueberries
currently called Lake Hiawatha
in an area called
parsipanong
a word
from a Lenape Native American sub-tribe
meaning “the place where
the river winds
through the valley of the polka-dotted sky”
in an area where the strawberry
boulders
are quite common above which
the oddly shaped stone
formations
that are the remains of the Pastel Mountains
can still be
seen today.
