#getmessyartjournal Messy Floral #1

#getmessyartjournal A van Gogh, Bob Burridge, Get Messy inspired acrylic floral in my Jane Davenport Canvas Journal.

I added the black lines with a Sakura Glaze pen. Do you think van Gogh would have liked this pen?

This was quick and so much fun!

Ooh Lá Lá! The texture.

#30Pages30Days Page 25 March 25 Sktchy Challenge: Be a Copycat.

#30Pages30Days Page 25 March 25
Sktchy Challenge: Be a Copycat.

This challenge arrived just when I borrowed the movie Loving Vincent from the Library. I took notice of a jar of blue flowers (Delphiniums?) by Dr. Gachet's side during his interview in the movie. I found an image of it on the internet, printed it out, and used it as the material for my "copycat". The idea behind being a copycat is to explore your favorite artist's process more deeply.

This was a fun little project. Some things that I noticed were van Gogh's brush strokes, the heavy black lines around the objects, and the use of a lot of blues, especially blue flowers in front of a blue background. Acrylic paint in my Jane Davenport Canvas Journal.

Narrated and time-lapse video of the process:

From Sketchbook to Canvas: White Birches

I was inspired by a sketchbook page to work on an old canvas that was just sitting down in the basement. The canvas had gone through several transformations - all of which turned into disasters - and I was tempted to carry it out to the burn barrel one day when I was organizing "stuff"!

Figuring I couldn't ruin it anymore than it already was, I decided to have a final go at it...

Achieving Interesting TOPOGRAPHY: 4 items I use for texture

Working to finish a project on canvas by rolling air drying Crayola Model Magic into "seeds". I will use Matte Medium to fix them to the canvas and then paint them with acrylics.

I used cheesecloth, white wrapping tissue paper, and corrugated cardboard to create other textures on the canvas.

Short video to explain my  process:

Birthday Love Letter!

I painted a "love letter".

It's not TO my husband on his birthday, but FOR my husband on his birthday! As you can see, it's for his other love interest. Acrylic on canvas board.

A Disaster turned into "A Summer Garden Journal Page"

juillet 2017 jardin

I was just happily engaged with gesso and acrylics and other art supplies too numerous to even remember, when I decided to dry the page with a heat tool.....

... everything started to crack and buckle and peel off. You can just see a touch of it in the page gutter.

I didn't take any pictures at the time... I was too busy trying to figure out what to do to save the page!

I scraped and painted and scraped and tried more paint and just kept going until eventually things started to stick to the page.

There's still a few spots that want to peel away... but I am happy with the quality of the black ink lines!

#DannyGregoryQuotes #3DaysinParsippany #TheTreeCity

Whether it is Winter or any other season
New Jersey is one of the most populous states
never-the-less it has a 42% tree cover
with Parsippany being recognized as
THE TREE CITY
for the past 40,000 years
because the First Children planted
the original groves of Weirwoods
in the eastern section of the township

where you can still find a few hardy specimens
of this species in a secret hollow
that the ice age glacial cover did not reach
but these wise and aware ancient ones are rare
and you are more likely to encounter
much younger Weirwoods
that were planted from seeds
flown on the Space Shuttle Columbia in 1997
and provided by the NJ State Forest Nursery in Jackson having been planted in habitats that contain
other outstanding and popular Parsippany
native plants some of which
may be endangered or of local concern
such as the Wahoo, Erect Bindweed,
Meadow Cuckoo-flower, Spiny Coontail,
Green Adder's-mouth, Floating Heart,
Northern Panic Grass, Strawberry-tomato,
Hooker's Orchid, Indian Physic,
Black-girdle Woolgrass, Lace-lip Ladies'-tresses,
Humped Bladderwort, and every artist's favorite, Stylosanthes biflora,
also known as Pencil-flower
which ironically has recently become hard to find in
Pencil-vania.

Tree #145/10,000: a series of hand-drawn arcs and linear marks...

Abstractedly done with acrylics and cellophane wrap in a Strathmore 500 Series Mixed Media Sketchbook.

Close-up of texture made by crinkling cellophane over the wet paint and left on page until the paint was dry. Under layer of texture is from a layer of gesso added to the page before painting.

Didn't want the circles to be perfect so I drew them by hand instead of tracing round objects. More organic this way.

Tree #143/10,000: The Temporal Aspect of the Standing People is beyond human understanding...

Wise Old Possum Woman was contemplating the temporal aspect of trees when she saw one in a rock.

The story in the stone inspired a journal page.

It's hard to see the texture and sheen of the page with a scan or photograph.

In the close up you can see the underpainting of light molding paste and resin sand.

The sheen is from iridescent acrylic paint.

Just Journaling: A Page for the New Year 2017

Waste not, want not,
Waste not, want not,
Use it up, wear it out,
Make it do, or do without!

"Waste not" in 2017 will mean "dig into the closet, find the art supplies that were bought ages ago but never used, and use them!"
"Want not" in 2017 will mean "do not run to the store (or the internet) to purchase every new art item that I learn about."
"Use it up, wear it out" in 2017 will mean "there's the art supplies - now make some art!"
"Make it do, or do without" in 2017 will mean "be creative with the art supplies that I have - explore their range of possibilities!"

Lots of layers of collage, acrylic paint, gesso, and Sakura Glaze pen in Strathmore 500 Series Mixed Media Sketchbook.

Narrow Depth of Field: British Soldiers

Cladonia cristatella "British Soldiers" Fruticose Lichen

Creating bokeh background: masked off the page with painter's tape.

Scribbled in a background with Derwent Art Bars. Then painted over the page with a waterbrush being careful not to blend all the colors away.

When dry, used a stencil to add circles.

Lichens were painted with acrylics. Strathmore 500 Series Mixed Media sketchbook.
