Inspired by Danny Gregory, to dip the Derwent Inktense pencil tips into water and then to draw with them. I wanted to show how colorful these pencils can be but couldn't use a lot of water to activate the inky goodness because this is Bristol paper in a Canson XL sprial journal.
My first try was small and tentative, not knowing how the pencils or the paper would react.
I liked the effect of both lines (mark making) and a more painterly look that was achieved by just dipping the tip of the pencil into water as opposed to having to use a paint brush with water after the drawing was complete.
The fun was in the feeling of both drawing and painting at the same time. A bit less water meant a line. A bit more water created an inky wash. Hard to predict the right amount of water, but control was not a goal. While getting bold I found that an occasion blotting with a paper towel to pick up "puddles" worked wonders. The flowers were inspired by the Connecticut roadside wildflowers in July.
