Bird Habitat Field Trips #HogIsland2019

A walk-about at the Marple Maple Farm. Plantings encourage insects to feast and breed so bird parents have plenty to feed the young'uns.

A stroll through the meadow by the Hog Island's boat dock with Steve Kress and fellow bird habitat workshop participants.

An Extra Treat for TiTi Today!

Titi kept jumping up on the bed. Not her usual “let's see if I can sneak as softly as I can onto the foot of the bed and curl up next to someone's foot in the middle of the night” manner , but bouncing on my legs as hard as she could. After she was shooshed off numerous times, she boldly jumped up and sat right next to my head. Again, I put her off of the bed, and again and again she continued to jump up. This behavior was definitely not her pattern. “What is up with this cat?” I wondered now fully awake. And now that I was awake, I heard a faint beeping. On and off. Every minute or so. An alarm? Too faint for the smoke alarm which is a blaring noise. By now Tom is awake, too. We get up to check it out. On venturing into the basement after checking all of the rooms upstairs, I discovered the source of the mysterious sound that the cat was trying to alert me to. The smoke/CO2 alarm was quietly beeping and stating in a calm woman's voice that the battery was low. No crisis, but thankful to my cat who tried to wake me when was something was amiss!

An extra treat for Titi today!

#HogIsland2019 Bird Habitats with Doug Tallamy

Arrival on a Sunday afternoon gives the camper time to reflect on the magical beauty of Audubon's Hog Island camp in Maine.

Colorful notes and illustrations on bird habitat lectures.

NO INSECTS = NO BABY BIRDS!

Much knowledge and wisdom from Deb Perkins, Doug Tallamy, and Steve Kress.

Yay! Baby Bird food!

To attract birds - "feather the edges" in your ecotones! Trees to shrubs to plants to lawn instead of abrupt changes such as trees to lawn.

#SBSColoredPencils #PlaysWithPencils "I choose truth over facts...." (August 2019)

Inspired by a sculpture I saw this past weekend at the Mystic Art Festival.

The truth of this image is definitely more compelling than any fact.

#SBSColoredPencils #PlaysWithPencils If I was in charge of naming seaweed...

I sketched in the sun, sand, and salty sea spray. Prismacolor Premier colored pencils and watercolor in Strathmore 500 Series Mixed Media Journal.

As I walked along the shoreline enjoying the feel of the waves, I discovered many different kinds of seaweed. I made mental notes of each kind along with a fun name to help me remember what it looked like.

Back at the beach blanket, I sketched Tom as he went into the waves, and decorated the page with my algal findings.

Nature Journaling outside of the box or in this case without a guide book. You don't always need a Latin binomial or even a botanical level drawing to enjoy recording nature.

#SBSColoredPencils #PlaysWithPencils Development piece of an interior view...

Waiting in the dentist's office for Tom. Practicing with colored pencils in my Jane Davenport Canvas Journal. My only view was of 2 chairs and a window with vertical blinds. Not one person in the room to sketch, so this is a development piece of an interior view also known as practicing sketching chairs .

#MyCanterburyCoddiwomples #The100DayProject Day 52 Jack-in-the-Pulpit

Day 52 of #The100DayProject. I searched the lower wet woods until I found "Jack". Considering the environment, I knew there just had to be some arum species about somewhere.

With the Jack-in-the-Pulpit, size and environmental conditions determine the sex of the plant. This means the plant may be male this year but female next year. The larger plants are usually female.

#PlaysWithPencils Space Rocks! Version 3 (tan background)

Derwent Metallic Pencils in a Strathmore Toned Tan Sketch Paper Journal.

When not tilted toward the light source, the page looks a little blah.

On these rocks I decided to do some mark making with my Lamy fountain pen.
